West Linn Radio Show

March 17, 2018 - 7PM

Sunset Firehall

The West Linn Historical Society presents the LIVE theatrical radio show. In the year 1956, the fictitious radio station, KWL-AM, serves its listeners with a traditional line-up of old time radio programming including news updates of the day, a brief soap opera, highlights from the community calendar, and of course West Linn History “on parade.”  This theatrical radio show is performed live in front of an audience at the West Linn Library on March 17, 2018 at 7pm. In the style of the popular radio programs of the 1930s, 40s, and 50s, this presentation will emulate the days long gone and filled with accurate historical information, performed by a talented cast of players.

It’s Saturday, March 17th, 1956. The movie “Oklahoma” with Shirley Jones and Gordon MacRae has just opened in select theatres across the nation. The Dow Jones industrial averages have reached the unbelievable height of 500 points. A young man has been causing quite a stir on the musical stage because of his body movements as he sings; his name - Elvis Presley. That, and he’s going to appear on national television. The shock of it all!

Meanwhile, in West Linn Oregon Radio Station KWL battles to keep its somewhat declining radio audience. TV and the introduction of Rock and Roll have made inroads into what has been, for years, a very stable audience base.

Traditionally, in the broadcasting industry, Saturday night has been the night to present your “Best” programming, and 8:00 p.m. is this time slot that is considered by most industry people to be the prime “listening time,” or, in the case of TV, “viewing” time. People are done with work for the week and just want to settle back and be entertained.

At Station KWL every effort, particularly for Saturday Nights, is being made to keep its listening audience. The lineup starts with “The Eight O’Clock NEWS - a round up of local and national news.”   Then, it’s on to the long running “West Linn History on Parade,” sponsored by DeJardin’s Thriftway Market. Next, we change pace as we listen in on the continuing soap opera saga, “As The Willamette Flows,” sponsored by DUZ Soap. Finally, we finish up with “The KWL Community Bulletin Board - now in its eleventh year.”

Come join us March 17th, 2018, as we go back in time to 1956, as The West Linn Historical Society presents “The West Linn Radio Hour.” We think you will enjoy learning a bit of West Linn’s history, told in a slightly different format.
